Hospital Year-to-Date Performance Reporting

Overview

Hospitals and the health systems to which they belong play an important role in the Massachusetts health care system and are critical to achieving the Commonwealth’s goals of controlling costs while improving the quality of care delivered. CHIA monitors and provides meaningful analysis on Massachusetts hospitals and hospital health systems through a variety of metrics and studies.

Starting with HFY 2025, the year-to-date financial dashboard has been expanded to include additional data on hospital health systems and interactive views of the graphics previously published in the quarterly PDF reports. In addition, the databook has been enhanced to include new features and more accessibility to filter and compare entities.

Median statewide acute total margin rose to 2.5%, while median operating margin declined to 1.1% compared with the prior YTD period. Total margin increased by 0.4 percentage points (from 2.1%), while operating margin decreased by 0.4 percentage points (from 1.5%).

Of the 58 reporting hospitals, 38 (66%) had positive total margins and 34 (59%) had positive operating margins. The share reporting positive total margins was unchanged from the prior year, while the share reporting positive operating margins increased slightly from 32 hospitals (55%).

Among health systems, 65% reported positive total margins, and 7 systems (30%) reported positive operating margins. These shares were unchanged from the prior year. The median total margin for health systems was 2.0%, while the median operating margin was -2.1%.

Compared with the prior year, aggregate acute hospital operating revenues increased by 7.7%, while expenses rose by 6.8%. In total, operating revenues exceeded expenses by $454.9 million.
