Nursing facilities serve an important role in the continuum of health care services in Massachusetts, providing nearly 12 million patient days of service in 2023.

To better understand this component of the Massachusetts health care system, CHIA's new dashboard, released in January 2025, examines the Commonwealth's nursing facilities at an industry level as well as at an individual facility level on measures of financial performance, quality of care, and utilization over a three-year period (2021-2023).

Massachusetts Nursing Facility Industry Key Findings

  • The nursing facility median total margin increased from -3.0% in 2022 to -1.6% in 2023.

  • In 2023, aggregate nursing facility total expenses exceeded aggregate revenues by $38.3 million.

  • Annualized expenses, which include cost of operations as well as management company fees and rent expenses if applicable, totaled $4.95 billion in 2023; while annualized revenues, including patient service revenue, investment and non-operating income, and other business revenues if applicable, totaled $4.91 billion in 2023.

  • Total resident days increased by 348,202 (3.0%) in 2023 compared with the prior calendar year.
