Mass. poised to ban medical debt from being reported to credit agencies

Governor Healey said the move would protect patients from long-term financial harm due to an illness or injury....More than one in eight Massachusetts residents, or more than 12 percent, have some sort of medical debt, according to a 2025 study from the Center for Health Information and Analysis, despite near-universal health insurance levels in the state. Families with incomes between 139 and 500 percent of the federal poverty line and Black residents were more likely to have $2,000 or more in medical debt, the study found. Patients often forgo other medical care as a result.
