CHIA collects hospital data on patient demographics, diagnoses and procedures, physicians, and charges for each inpatient discharge, outpatient observation stay, and emergency department visit in Massachusetts. Hospitals submit data in accordance with the requirements of the Data Submission Specification Manuals, which set forth the file format, record specifications, data elements, definitions, code tables, and edit specifications for each database. These manuals can be found in the blue box on the right of this page. Hospitals submit inpatient, outpatient observation, and outpatient emergency department data quarterly.
CHIA hosted a webinar on to review the proposed changes to the FY2026 Redline Hospital Outpatient Observation Data Specifications. See the webinar presentation for more information.
The Hospital Case Mix Data Specification Manuals provide information on the data file format, data specifications, data element definitions, and quality standards that data submitters must follow when submitting Case Mix files to CHIA.
Acute hospitals submit their Case Mix data through a CHIA web-based submission platforms. Case Mix data is submitted to CHIA online through CHIA Submissions. If you are a new provider or new user and do not have log in credentials, you must register with CHIA as soon as possible.
New users must register to submit data via CHIA Submissions.
