CHIA Releases Studies of the Massachusetts Health Care Workforce

DATE: February 19, 2026

CHIA has released two reports today about the state of the Massachusetts health care workforce: results from the 2025 Massachusetts Health Care and Human Services Workforce Survey (MHCW) and the first Interactive Nursing Dashboard

Massachusetts Health Care and Human Services Workforce Survey (MHCW)

CHIA has published results from the 2025 MHCW in an interactive dashboard showing information on staffing capacity and demographics in 13 key health care and human services sectors. The biennial MHCW provides a critical fact base to monitor workforce trends and inform state policies and programs as health care providers continue to experience unprecedented workforce challenges.

The interactive dashboard also allows users to explore statewide cross-sector results for 5 key occupations: physicians, registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), direct care workers, and social workers.

Interactive Nursing Dashboard

CHIA has produced its inaugural Integrated Nursing Dashboard, developed in collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS), to provide an in-depth look into the nursing sector and to support the Commonwealth in meeting the health care needs of its residents.

State and publicly available federal data sources were used to outline key characteristics of the registered nurse (RN) and licensed practical nurse (LPN) workforce in Massachusetts. Side-by-side comparisons between RNs and LPNs are available for measures including the total number of employed nurses, demographic breakdowns, employment status, sector distribution, recruitment and retention challenges, wage and salary trends, and key data on the education pipeline and credentialing.
