HFY 2024 Hospital Profiles Now Available to Compare Key Metrics

CHIA has published its latest comprehensive overview of Massachusetts hospital performance for hospital fiscal year (HFY) 2024. The latest Acute Hospital Profiles and Non-Acute Hospital Profiles provide information about Massachusetts hospital characteristics, services, payer mix, utilization trends, top discharges, and financial performance over a 5-year period through HFY 2024. These profiles enable comparison against statewide, regional, or peer cohorts for each measure. For the first time, there is a statewide profile for acute hospitals that provides an overview of median or aggregate data.
New legislation passed as part of Chapter 343 of the Acts 2024 requires CHIA to report on payer type margins for acute hospitals. These calculations have been included for the first time for HFY 2024 in Acute Profiles. More information on how the margins were calculated is provided in the technical appendix.
The profiles are also accompanied by an executive summary and a detailed databook as well as separate interactive dashboards for acute and non-acute hospitals. These dashboards allow users to filter results by individual hospital, hospital type, and hospital health system.
For most acute hospitals, HFY 2024 ran from October 1, 2023, through September 30, 2024. Fiscal years vary for non-acute hospitals. Note that the HFY 2024 profiles will be the final year that includes data from the Steward Health Care hospital system as it was still operating in Massachusetts during the covered time period.
