The Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) has published an expanded version
of its latest monthly enrollment data summaries by key market sector to provide more insight into the impact of COVID-19 on insurance coverage in the Commonwealth.
This release covers enrollment figures through March 2021, including a full calendar year of health insurance enrollment data following Governor Baker's state of emergency declaration.
- Overall insurance coverage has remained fairly stable during the pandemic, with almost 6.5 million Massachusetts residents receiving coverage from private commercial plans, MassHealth, or Medicare.
- Private commercial insurance plans, which cover approximately 3.9 million Massachusetts residents, declined by over 153,000 (-3.8%) between March 2020 and March 2021, in large part due to job losses that impacted employer-sponsored insurance (ESI) coverage.
- The number of individuals with primary MassHealth coverage grew by approximately 190,000 (16.2%) during the past year, which was largely attributable to the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.
