Massachusetts Acute Care Hospital Inpatient Discharge Data offers new insights into hospital inpatient utilization patterns in the period leading up to the outbreak of COVID-19. This report presents key measures of inpatient utilization overall and by hospital, patient, and discharge characteristics. It marks the first in a new series providing analyses and trends from CHIA's Acute Hospital Case Mix Database, which is a database of stay-level encounters with acute care hospitals going back more than 20 years.

This report establishes an important baseline of inpatient utilization that can be used for public health initiatives, analyses of preventable hospitalizations and readmissions, and comparative cost and outcomes research.

CHIA's new hospital and health system financial performance report with data through June 30, 2020. provides a quarterly update on profitability, liquidity, and solvency for the fiscal year-to-date period. This report has additionally been expanded to include the financial impact of COVID-19 on hospitals.

Governor Baker declared a state of emergency on March 10; therefore this report includes the first four months of the financial impact of COVID-19 on hospital health care operations. Federal COVID-related funding was distributed in April, May, and June to hospitals as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act and is reflected in the data as operating revenue. State relief funds were also distributed to hospitals in this time period.

CHIA's monthly enrollment data summaries covers enrollment figures through September 2020. This edition includes six months of data following Governor Baker's state of emergency declaration on March 10, 2020. CHIA continues to produce this information in order to provide rapid insight into the impact of COVID-19 on insurance coverage in Massachusetts.

The Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) has published Offering and Enrollment in High Deductible Health Plans in Massachusetts Firms: Which Workers Can Offset Cost through a Savings Option?

With rising health care costs, employers that offer insurance coverage to employees have shifted toward HDHPs as a way to lower health insurance premiums, either including a HDHP as one choice in the set of plans offered to employees or as the only plan offered to employees. It is critical, therefore, to understanding the Commonwealth's health care system to have a full picture of HDHP access and enrollment among employees at Massachusetts firms.

Behavioral Health and Readmissions in Massachusetts Acute Care Hospitals is a statewide, all-payer examination of the prevalence of behavioral health comorbidities and readmissions among hospitalized adults in Massachusetts acute care hospitals.

Given the high hospital utilization and cost associated with comorbid behavioral health conditions, stakeholders share a growing awareness that patients with behavioral health comorbidities may have a higher than average risk of readmissions, thus any efforts to reduce readmissions should include identifying risk factors associated with these populations.

This new hospital and health system financial performance report includes the period of June and July 2020.

CHIA implemented a voluntary monthly financial data collection beginning in March 2020 in order to provide insight into the impact of COVID-19 on the Massachusetts health care system. This report provides an overview of the results of operations for 37 participating acute hospitals and 11 health systems.

This publication includes a report with release notes and detailed data tables as well as a databook.

Massachusetts Acute Hospital and Health System Financial Performance for Fiscal Year 2019

The Massachusetts Acute Hospital and Health System Financial Performance for Fiscal Year 2019 report presents financial performance data using five metrics: total margin, operating margin, current ratio, average payment period, and equity financing. It also includes a comparison of the performance of four hospital cohorts (Academic Medical Centers, teaching, community, and community-High Public Payer) on each metric over a five-year period, fiscal years 2015 through 2019.

This CHIA publication also includes an interactive dashboard containing individual hospital information and five-year trend analyses, a databook and a technical appendix.

CHIA has also released the latest edition of its regular biannual Enrollment Trends report with data through March 2020. This publication includes an updated interactive dashboard, a databook, technical appendix, and MA APCD programming code.

To provide more rapid insight into the impact of COVID-19 on insurance coverage in the Commonwealth, CHIA is now producing monthly enrollment data summaries by key market sectors. This new report series is in addition to CHIA’s regular biannual Enrollment Trends reports.

This month’s publication includes enrollment figures through May 2020. CHIA intends to continue reporting on Massachusetts insurance coverage on a monthly basis as the impact of COVID-19 is further felt across insurance categories and market sectors.

CHIA Releases Interactive Provider Quality Dashboard (June 2020)

This interactive dashboard on selected clinical quality measures for 2018 is part of CHIA's ongoing work to monitor health care quality in the Commonwealth. A Focus on Provider Quality: Selected Clinical Measures, 2018 examines performance across a subset of metrics from the NCQA Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS ®).

 

This analysis explores the clinical performance of care delivered to Massachusetts commercial HMO/POS members during 2018, both at the statewide and primary care medical group levels.

CHIA Announces Results of 2019 MA Health Insurance Survey (April 2020)

The Findings from the 2019 Massachusetts Health Insurance Survey provides information on health insurance coverage, health care access and use, and health care affordability in the Commonwealth.

In an effort to better understand the experiences of Massachusetts residents in obtaining timely and affordable care, the 2019 survey includes more in-depth questions on health status, affordability issues for individuals and their families, and behavioral health.

CHIA released an updated interactive dashboard of Enrollment Trends, offering new insights into changes in health insurance coverage in Massachusetts from September 2017 through September 2019.

 

Coverage is defined as unique Massachusetts residents with primary, medical membership in the 14 largest commercial payers, MassHealth (Medicaid), and Medicare.

Enrollment Trends is produced using the MA APCD, supplemented with additional data from commercial payers, the Massachusetts Health Connector, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Social Risk Factors and Readmissions Workgroup Report

CHIA has released a report from the statewide Social Risk Factors and Readmissions Workgroup, which details the proposed solution for accounting for social risk factors in the public reporting of all-payer, unplanned hospital readmissions.

CHIA has adopted a conceptual framework for social risk factors and expanded its existing risk-adjustment model to incorporate patient- and community-level social risk factors. This enhanced methodology will be used in CHIA’s December 2020 annual readmissions report.

Commercial Prescription Drug Useand Spending, 2015-2017 (February 2020)
Commercial Prescription Drug Use & Spending Research

CHIA released its second study on prescription drug use and spending in an effort to shine a light on the drivers of pharmacy expenditures, including high volume and high cost drugs. To advance transparency in this area of the health care market for policymakers, researchers, and the public, CHIA has published an interactive dashboard and detailed dataset, allowing users to see drivers of prescription drug spending as well as the associated conditions these drugs treat.

Massachusetts Hospital Profiles provide information on acute and non-acute hospitals based on hospital characteristics, services, payer mix, utilization trends, cost trends, and financial performance over a five-year period through Fiscal Year 2018.

These profiles enable comparison against statewide and peer cohorts for each measure. These profiles are accessible through a user-friendly web application that allows users to see different data visualizations that provide insight into the acute hospital industry.
