Hospitals and the health systems to which they belong play an important role in the Massachusetts health care system, and are critical to achieving the Commonwealth’s goals of controlling costs while maintaining or improving the quality of care delivered. CHIA monitors and provides meaningful analysis on Massachusetts hospitals and hospital health systems hospitals through a variety of metrics and studies.
Hospital profiles are available for each Massachusetts acute and non-acute hospital, in addition to an overall summary of the hospital industry. The profiles provide comparative information on hospital characteristics, services, payer mix, and trends in utilization, cost, and financial performance.
CHIA examines Massachusetts hospital financial performance on a quarterly and annual basis to monitor each acute hospital’s financial health. Hospital performance for profitability, liquidity, and solvency metrics are published in quarterly and annual reports, and in individual hospital trend analysis. Read more
Massachusetts Hospital Profiles provide descriptive and comparative information on acute and non-acute hospitals based on hospital characteristics, services, payer mix, utilization trends, cost trends, financial performance, and quality over a five year period. The FY 2017 publication includes an individual profile for each acute hospital, a consolidated profile for each acute and non-acute hospital cohort, and a comprehensive databook. Additionally, and new for FY2017, there is an interactive dashboard for all acute hospitals. Hospital readmissions are a central issue in efforts to improve health care quality and reduce costs, due to readmissions being a costly and potentially preventable problem that impacts patient health and experience of care both nationally and in Massachusetts. Read more
The Massachusetts Patient Origins map allows users to identify the areas from which hospitals and hospital systems draw their patients by illustrating the distribution of hospital inpatient discharges in 2013 by patient zip code, for each acute care hospital and 11 hospital systems in Massachusetts. Relative price is a calculated measure that compares different provider prices within a payer’s network for a standard mix of insurance products (e.g. HMO, PPO, and Indemnity) to the average of all providers’ prices in that network. Commercial payers’ prices for similar services vary considerably among Massachusetts hospitals. Read more
CHIA collects detailed financial information from hospitals to increase transparency for the Commonwealth, and has improved our process of collection and distribution.
